The Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project

Central Kalimantan, Seruyan District

Overview

The Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve is predominantly tropical peat swamp forest. The reserve covers 91,215 ha of land and it lies along the eastern flank of world renowned Tanjung Puting National Park. It is home to several endangered species, including the orang-utan. 14 villages also lie in the area.

The Rimba Raya project represents an innovation in the field of conservation via Reductions in Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD). It seeks to adopt an integrated approach to greenhouse gas emissions reductions that emphasizes both rural development and orangutan habitat conservation.

Survey results carried out in the area indicate that despite a history of selective logging in the area, forest biomass is moderately high and relatively consistent across major forest blocks in Rimba Raya.  Peats areas were also found to be around 4-5 m deep across all survey transects. The project can consequently make a signficant contribution to Indonesia's efforts to reduce carbon emissions from land use change.
